HOW DO YOU CAPTURE A DIRECTOR’S VISION AND TRANSLATE THAT INTO A PROGRAM TO INFORM, INSPIRE, AND MOTIVATE STUDENTS TO ATTEND SUMMER SESSION? YOU BEGIN WITH THE DIRECTOR’S MUSINGS. YOU CONSIDER ATTRACTIONS NEARBY. YOU DEVELOP CONCEPTS THAT MELD IT ALL TOGETHER INTO A WARM, SUNNY, SEASONAL APPEAL.
Sylvie Beaudette, Summer Sessions director for the Eastman School of Music, had some ideas on how to pique the interest of music students to continue their studies through the summer months. She commissioned PAKAN to develop three images that would appeal to a musician’s summer fancy. These images would be used throughout the school and theatre to announce key dates, times, and events for the summer session. They would be used in the dorms as motivation and decoration. The images were first developed from concept sketches. These evolved into oil paintings. They were then brought into the digital realm and completed using image manipulation, photography, and digital painting software. This made it possible to output the images in multiple sizes for a variety of uses. PAKAN took the concept a step further by designing posters from the images that seem to have been born in another time.
